Elissa Samuels has always been a caring person and a great listener, which is what drove her to the helping profession. She earned a membership at Psi Chi, the National Honors Society for Psychology, and got her Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology.
She has provided supervision for other counselors and is licensed in both Pennsylvania and Maryland.
For 11 years, Elissa has been helping clients who struggled with anxiety, depression, grief, low self-esteem, and shame. She uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to modify behavior and improve mood. She will also utilize various other modalities to tailor treatment to a person’s individual needs. She seeks to build a strong therapeutic alliance by listening with compassion and working together with her clients in creating plan of action towards a practical solution. She is also very knowledgeable in LGBT issues as well as lifestyles outside of the norm.
Elissa also specializes in Dual Diagnosis, where both mental health and drug or alcohol addiction diagnoses are present. She is extremely knowledgeable of techniques to identify relapse triggers and coping skills that aid in recovery. She assists in helping her clients learn about how their addiction and mental health are linked and understand the importance of treatment for both.
“Change is scary. The fear of the unknown can be paralyzing enough to keep us in circumstances we are unhappy with. But change will only occur when the pain of things remaining the same becomes greater than that fear. You have taken the first step towards change by reaching out for help.
We will face your challenges together; you are not alone. I look forward to working with you.”
